Best Wood for a Brick Oven

Image
After setting up your wood-fired brick oven, that you purchased from Round Grove Products , you are now ready to fire up your oven for a nice homemade pizza. But wait! You don't want your pizza tasting smoky or smelling a bit musty because you were using the wrong type of firewood.      Not all wood is created equal when it comes to wood fired ovens and not all firewood contributes to a delicious flavor while cooking in the fire. If you were unaware, cooking in a wood fire oven is actually a healthier option than a regular oven.       With this in mind, it would be best not to use firewood that is a hazard to your health. Laminated woods, pressure treated and painted woods, or any woods that has chemicals are never to be used in a wood fired oven.      All the woods listed above have hazardous chemicals that can be toxic for humans. Be sure to also avoid woods ...

Soft Pretzels!

Image
One thing I used to love about going to the mall (does anyone do that anymore nowadays?) was stopping by the soft pretzel stand. I loved to watch the employees spin and roll the dough into the familiar twists. They made it look so easy! Even better when they rolled that dough around a hotdog...ah, memories. Anyway, maybe you want some soft pretzel goodness at home! You can do it in your brick oven. This recipe takes some time because you have to ferment the dough, but believe me, it is worth the effort! Ingredients: For the fermented dough 2 tsp. of fresh yeast 3 3/4 c. white bread flour 2 tsp. salt 1 3/4 c. water Rub yeast into flour with your fingers. Add salt and water and mix until a dough forms. Work the dough on an unfloured surface. Cover with cloth and let it rest at room temperature for at least 6 hours or let it rest in the fridge for up to 48 hours, until the dough doubles in size. Finishing ingredients 3 3/4 c. white bread flour 2 tsp. of fresh yeast 3 3/4 tsp. of sugar 2 t...

Brick Oven Care

Image
Our Fiesta Combo Unit Family (unfinished) Having a brick oven is a lot of fun, but it is also an investment. Like anything you spend your hard-earned money on, you want it to last! Round Grove Products makes fantastic, durable brick ovens, but there is some maintenance that will help it stay in great condition so that you can use it for decades. 1. Keep it Clean As you use your oven, ashes will accumulate. A quick sweep after each time you use it will be good for a while, but when there are a lot of ashes in the hard to reach spaces, it's time to get out the shop-vac. Vacuum out the tough spots and don't worry about eating ashy food! 2. We have the Cure Maybe you didn't know this, but you should "cure" your oven before using it! Why? Well, there is always a bit of moisture that is trapped during the construction process. If left alone, when you go to use it, the moisture becomes steam and that steam can expand and crack and damage the masonry. Before you use it t...

French Onion Soup

Image
French onion soup is one of those comfort foods that just warms the soul. Savory, cheesy, brothy goodness in a bowl. Just make sure the bowls you use are rated to withstand 500-degree temperatures. The directions call for the first few steps of this recipe to be prepped on a stove, but you could also use a gas grill. The soup will, of course, be finished in the brick oven . Ingredients 1/2 Cup Unsalted Butter 4 Onions – sliced 2 Garlic Cloves – chopped 2 Bay Leaves 2 Fresh Thyme Sprigs 1 Cup Sherry (or your favorite wine) 3 Heaping Tablespoons All-Purpose Flour 2 Quarts Beef Broth 1 Baguette – sliced 1/4 Lb. Each: Grated Gruyere & Swiss Cheese Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper Preparation (serves 4) Fire up your brick oven to 500°F — use an infrared temperature gun to check temp when ready. Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat on stove. Add the onions, garlic, bay leaves, thyme, salt and pepper and cook until onions are caramelized — about 20 minutes. Add the wine and brin...

STAX: Modular Brick Oven System

Image
We love providing brick ovens to our customers, no matter the location that they want their unit placed. However, because of issues with land shape and object clearance problems, we can provide a modular build that can be brought in to your living space using smaller equipment so that nothing can stand in your way of getting your own brick oven from Round Grove Products !  The STAX modular system we use to install your brick oven begins with you deciding if you want simply a fireplace, a brick oven or a combo unit in your living space. After you make this decision, it is determined what pieces are needed at the worksite as, depending on the model and build selection, some units have more or fewer modules than other units do. These pieces are then brought to your home to install as we would a normal single piece brick oven, but with smaller stand-behind equipment instead of our normal larger equipment. Although this process will take a little more time than a normal Round Grove bric...

Brick Ovens: How do I make up my mind?

Image
There are a lot of things to consider when you are trying to decide what style of brick oven is right for you. You may be asking yourself ‘how much will I use it’? ‘Will I burn everything I make’? ‘Will cooking in a brick oven help me win MasterChef’? Unfortunately, we don’t have all of the answers for questions like that. However, we can give you tips for making the decision about what type of brick oven you should get.  The first most obvious decision that comes when you are looking into brick ovens is deciding whether you want just simply a brick oven or a brick oven-fireplace combo . Are you going to be using this brick strictly for cooking and then heading back inside to enjoy your meal? You may want just a brick oven then. What about if you plan on entertaining guests outside all night long after eating a wood-fired mea...
